Your Guide to Smile Makeovers

A smile makeover is a lot different than a style makeover. Whereas the latter just requires a change of wardrobe, the former consists of dental procedures that improve the quality of teeth, such as dental veneers, tooth implants, and teeth whitening. Basically, tooth makeovers are cosmetic—as opposed to critical—procedures.

Tooth Color
When you arrange for a smile makeover, a dentist will examine your gums, mouth, surrounding features, and skin tone to help determine the most complementary smile for your face. If you’ve had silver fillings in the past, they could be replaced with white ones that would blend in with your natural tooth color. If your teeth have darkened in general, they could be brightened and restored to a more youthful looking white.

Tooth Alignment
The alignment of your teeth can also affect the appearance of your smile. If teeth are crooked or gaps exist in certain areas, they can be straightened with orthodontics. Missing teeth are a more serious issue, because this can affect your chewing ability. Fortunately, a missing tooth problem can be rectified with bridges, dentures, or implants. When teeth are chipped, cracked, or uneven in places, cosmetic bonding can be applied for a fuller, more even look.

Tooth Length
Youthful looking smiles are also related to tooth length, which many people lose as they age. If your teeth have shortened over time, composite bonding or porcelain veneers can help reshape and elongate your incisors. In the case of a gummy smile, a dentist could shorten the gum line and alter the teeth’s appearance via laser dentistry. In some cases, a periodontist may be recommended if crown lengthening is the best possible procedure.
